From the newest technologies to the experienced hands guiding them, our obsession to be the best for our customers is alive and well in every corner of our Lab, including our Digital Surfacing department.  

Our Surfacing department is creating custom lenses each and every day.  

“I take a lens blank, and then I utilize our technology to put the prescription into that lens blank,” says Jon, our Digital Surfacing Manager. “Then we make it into the thinnest lenses possible for a frame.” He’s been doing that for Cherry since 2007. And, after nearly two decades, his passion for the work hasn’t slowed. Neither has the passion of the whole department. They know the careful, detailed work they do ensures patients get the clearest vision possible.  

Just ask Jon: “We utilize our experience within our team and our equipment to be able to provide that customer, that Eye Care Professional, with the correct information when it comes to talking with their patient.” 

That’s why we’ve given our team the tools that most Labs our size don’t have.  

Like our AutoMapper, for example. It compares the lens manufacturer’s design to what we’ve produced, making sure that patients get exactly what they were promised. And we don’t stop there.  

“A lot of Labs don’t have the software that we have,” says Jon. “And all the other machines that we have—they’re all state-of-the-art. And we keep replacing and renewing them as technology grows.” Take our Keyence microscope as another example. It identifies even the tiniest flaws, allowing us to see what we couldn’t see before. We’re talking about spotting a pit the size of a pinprick, figuring out where it came from, and then using that information to tweak our processes and keep it from happening next time. 

With this new tech, we’re solving problems before they begin, with the goal of absolute precision in mind. 

As Jon puts it, “With our tech, we can calibrate down to the micron. And for reference, a strand of hair is about one hundred microns thick.” 

But our level of precision isn’t just impressive, it’s essential. “As designs become more demanding and more flexible in the amount of power and prism we can put within them, we need machines that can do more,” explains Jon. That precise machinery matters because it means fewer remakes, faster turn times, and Happier Humans. And it means Eye Care Professionals can trust Cherry to deliver a lens right the first time.  

Just ask Jon: “We invest in these machines for our customers. They help make the product right the first time.”  

Our obsession with getting it right means that every patient gets the clearest vision possible.  

For us, this is more than just a job. “I’m obsessed, by nature, with what I do,” says Jon. “There’s just something about getting it done right the first time. And everybody feels that. Our team members carry out each process with exacting precision because we hold ourselves to the highest standards. We believe that constantly checking for quality is the key to pursuing perfection.”
